MUMBAI: Except for V P Naik, no Maharashtra chief minister has been able to complete a full term.
The state has had 22 chief ministers since its formation on May 1, 1960, which has been occupied by 14 persons. Of them, six were Marathas.
Incumbents from Vidarbha have ruled Maharashtra for over 15 years while those from Marathwada have held the reins for nearly ten years.
The powerful western Maharashtra region has produced nine chief ministers, three of them from the Konkan.
Chief ministers like Vasantrao Patil and Sharad Pawar have had four terms while S B Chavan was twice CM. V P Naik had three terms, but only one of them (1967-''72) was a full term.
The only time Maharashtra was under President''s rule was between February and June 1980. This happened because the then PM Indira Gandhi, after her triumphant return to power, dismissed the Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) government formed by the then 38-year-old Pawar, who was Maharashtra''s youngest chief minister.
Pawar had cobbled together the government by breaking away from the Congress with the help of the Janata Party.
The only non-Congress government Maharashtra has had was between 1995 and 1999, when the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance ruled the state. No mid-term election has ever been held in the state.
Maharashtra''s first CM Y B Chavan became defence minister in 1962 and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha in 1977. His protege Sharad Pawar held both these offices, in 1998 and 1991 respectively.
However, Chavan remains the only Deputy Prime Minister from the state. He held this post under the short-lived Charan Singh government.
V P Naik became the chief minister in 1963 and remained in office for 12 long years. Except for West Bengal''s Jyoti Basu, his record is unbeaten.
But Naik''s two partial terms were separated by two general elections.
Under him, the Congress went to the polls in 1967 and 1972, winning both times. Naik was summarily removed by Indira Gandhi just before the Emergency to install S B Chavan. After the Emergency, Chavan was overthrown by Vasantrao Patil.
But as luck would have it, Patil''s second term came to an end abruptly when Sharad Pawar revolted against him. Pawar had to go when Indira Gandhi imposed President''s rule on Maharashtra for a brief period.
The mercurial A R Antulay was the only chief minister from the minority community. He was removed by Indira Gandhi after the high court held him guilty of corrupt practices.
After more than 12 years, Antulay became a Union minister for a short period. He is the fourth Maharashtra chief minister to become a member of the Union council of ministers besides Y B Chavan, S B Chavan and Pawar.
While laying down office, Antulay installed the nondescript Babasaheb Bhosale in his place.
The shortest tenure—of just nine months—was that of Shivajirao Nilangekar, who made a humiliating exit after an adverse high court verdict, the second shortest being that of Babasaheb, who was in office for about 13 months.
Sushilkumar Shinde was the first Dalit to become chief minister.
